Is reality T.V. making preppers look bad?

The reason I prep is so that when a disaster hits should it be an earthquake, mass storm, volcano, polar shift, what ever. I do not wanna be stuck waiting for help nor do I wanna be without food, water, first aid, or shelter for myself or my family, I would like to be ready.
