JERICHO STORYLINE

When Jake Green returns to his Kansas small-town home Jericho, where his dad Johnston is mayor, everyone is preoccupied with petty private business and family matters, but that changes drastically after a completely unexpected explosion. It soon becomes clear there has been a nuclear attack, but neither by whom nor on which scale. Suddenly life in Jericho, and as the inhabitants gradually discover all over the disintegrating USA, becomes a more primordial struggle for survival, where unexperienced dangers, primitive as well as technological, have to be weighed against pressing primal needs, such as food, fuel and self-defense against plunderers, invaders and even each-other. Jake, whose private story like that of other main characters slowly becomes disclosed to us, proves extremely resourceful and a smart hero, while his father’s mayoral authority and even that of the only available medical professionals is soon challenged and undermined, criminal potentials are tapped into by circumstances and good people must rise to the daunting occasion assertively or perish. Even when contact is made with neighboring surviving towns, desperate rivalry soon cancels out solidarity. Furthermore, there is a well-equipped, hidden organization at work, which recently arrived Robert Hawkins belongs to… Written by KGF Vissers IMDB.

DOC’S TAKE

I wanted to grab the storyline off of IMDB just to see what the non-prepper thinks of the TV series. I was turned on to the series by BFTC user cwmeats, (thank you by the way.)  Although some of the subplots are predictable, the boy gets girl, boy looses girl and then the boy gets girl back type of stuff, the series was entertaining.

As is was a TV series the characters were well developed and the back story on them made the connection with each of them easy. The idea of the political strife in the town was a little contrived. I am not to sure that even in a small town you would want to have an election in the middle of a crisis. They kind of us that concept as a high road in a latter episode. The scenarios that the writers came up with are true enough so you do not need to suspend your disbelief to much. The One other thing, because of ratings the series was not picked back up, there are a lot of lose ends at the end of season 2.

I was reading some of the other comments on the various websites dedicated to this now “Cult” classic. One of the criticisms that I found funny was that the series was the attempt to project the survivalist agenda. I am not to sure what the survivalist agenda is. If the producers and writers were projecting “survivalist ideals” then they did a poor job. Most of the population did not have food to last them more than a few months. The population was lost with out a central federal government. They elected officials did not want to make any decisions without the approval of the state. So as far as a how to for preppers, not so much.

RENT OR NOT

If you have Netflix I say take the time to watch it and enjoy.

You will be glad to learn that the Jericho story continues in the Season 3 graphic novel: http://tinyurl.com/4zoztad The storyline is act one of a much larger Jericho story that the producers are developing as a TV movie.
