A New HAM Navigating HAMCON
Sep 13th, 2011 | By admin | Category: Communications, Getting ReadySo as I stated in a Channel Updated I attended HAMCON 2011, after my last Technician HAM Class this last weekend. I learned of HAMCON during the class and as I walked into the convention hall, I quickly realized I have a lot to learn!
HAMCON is an Amateur Radio organization formed several years ago to coordinate in the Los Angeles County area, the ARRL Southwestern Division Convention HAMCON every 4 years.
This convention is held each year in a four year cycle. The cycle is in Los Angeles County, then to the Phoenix, AZ area, next it is held in Riverside, then in San Diego, and then back to the Los Angeles area. The Southwestern Division encompasses Southern California and all of Arizona. This is an official ARRL convention.
To be completely honest I felt like an outsider, I felt everyone was speaking Greek, and I was lost! I am not one to get overwhelmed and tuck my tail, so continual study, reading & learning from those who transmitted before me is high on my list. A valuable tool for me is the QRZ web site. I highly suggest you visit if you are planning on getting into the hobby.
If you are thinking about getting into HAM, I highly suggest it. I know first hand how much HAM can help in an emergency situation from my experience in the Gulf Coast after Katrina. I am looking forward to passing my exam and obtaining my license. Once that is under my belt I plan on joining a local club to continue my education and gain experience.
